Biden’s National Security Adviser Warns of IS Threat in Afghanistan

President Biden’s national security adviser,. Jake Sullivan, warned of Islamic State threats amid the ongoing evacuation in Afghanistan.

“The threat is real. It is acute. It is persistent. And it is something we are focused on with every tool in our arsenal,” said Sullivan during a CNN interview

Sullivan however, has not yet specified what kind of attack the IS are planning to do.

“We know that terrorists may seek to exploit the situation and target innocent Afghans or American troops. We’re maintaining constant vigilance to monitor and disrupt threats from any source,” added Biden during a press briefing.

ISIS has been conducting attacks against US troops in Afghanistan since its formation and is known to fight with the Taliban for territory.

According to the UN last June, ISIS conducted 77 attacks against US and NATO forces in Afghanistan from June to April 2021 alone.
