Amazon on Thursday is reportedly planning to open a series of large-scale retail locations that resemble department stores in the United States.
People familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal that some of the first Amazon department stores are expected to be in California and Ohio and will be “smaller than most department stores” at around 30,000 square feet.
It is yet unclear what brands Amazon will stock but it will sell products from top consumer brands and its own private label and will expand its sale of electronics, clothing, and household items.
The sources added that these plans have not yet been finalized.
Amazon declined to comment on the claims calling them “rumors and speculation”.
The pandemic sealed the fate of several high-profile department stores with their sales already plummeting.
Amazon has seen its fortunes skyrocket during the pandemic as it profited from an increasing shift toward e-commerce.
