The Texas Department of State Health Services has requested five additional mortuary trucks from the federal government early this month to deal with a surge of deaths from Covid-19.
Texas officials said they requested the trucks from the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a “precaution,” given rapid and widespread Covid-19 transmission.
“We don’t know of any place that needs these now due to Covid, but part of a response is being prepared for what could happen. Knowing that it takes a few weeks for these to arrive, we wanted to go ahead and put the request in,” said the department in a statement.
The number of Covid-19 deaths in the state has been on a steady increase with the arrival of the highly contagious delta variant which has overwhelmingly hospitalized and killed the unvaccinated.
Texas is currently dealing with one of the largest increases in Covid-19 cases in the country, reaching nearly 22,000 new daily infections over the weekend.
