Philippines Detects First Case of COVID-19 Lambda Variant

The Philippines reported its first case of the Lambda variant of COVID-19 on Aug. 15.

The Department of Health (DOH) announced that it detected the Lambda variant from a 35-year-old woman, who is still being verified if she is a local case or a returning overseas Filipino.

DOH said that the case was asymptomatic and was tagged as recovered after undergoing a 10-day isolation period, adding that health authorities are currently conducting back tracing and case investigation.

The Lambda variant, also known as C.37, was first identified in Peru in August 2020 and was classified as a variant of interest on June 14, 2021 by the World Health Organization.

DOH also reported an additional 182 Delta variant cases, bringing the tally to 807.

In total, the Philippines reported 14,749 new cases on Aug. 15, bringing the nationwide tally to 1,741,616.
