Russia to Expel BBC Journalist in Retaliation for “Media Discrimination” in the UK

Russia has ordered BBC correspondent Sarah Rainsford until the end of the month to leave the country in retaliation against alleged Russian media discrimination in the UK.

Rainsford is set to fly home after her visa expires on August 31 and would be declared persona non grata by the Russian government.

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s decision not to extend her visa was allegedly in retaliation to UK’s refusal to grant or extend visas to Russian journalists.

Both the BBC and Rainsford have not yet commented on the expulsion while the British embassy in Moscow has not yet issued a protest.

The last British journalist expelled in Russia was the Guardian’s Luke Harding in 2011.
