Turkish Authorities Rescue Migrants Abandoned off Deserted Island

The Turkish Coast Guard reported that they rescued a group of asylum seekers who were allegedly abandoned by a Greek Coast Guard boat on the uninhabited Turkish island of Basak.

The National Defense Ministry said that drones used to detect forest fires in Turkey’s south and west noticed that an LS-134 vessel belonging to the Greek coast guard nearing Başak where it abandoned the migrants.

The Ministry immediately ordered Turkish Coast Guard Command units to rescue the immigrants who were left on the island without any supplies.

There were no details on how many migrants were reportedly abandoned on the Island while the Greek government has not yet released a statement.

Refusing migrants is highly discouraged under international refugee protection agreements, which dictate that refugees should not be expelled or returned to a country where they may face danger due to their race, religion, nationality, or membership in a social or political group.
