Tokyo Records Highest Daily COVID-19 Cases for Monday

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 2,884 new COVID-19 cases on Aug. 9, marking the highest daily record for a Monday to date.

COVID-19 cases usually decrease on Mondays due to low testing figures over the weekend.

The latest daily figure for Tokyo marks the 14th straight day the Japanese capital recorded over 2,000 new cases and it came a day after the Olympics concluded.

The average for Tokyo over the past seven days stands at 4,135.4 while the total number of cases is now at 252,169.

Tokyo reported its highest daily cases of 5,042 last Aug. 5.

Tokyo remains under its fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of COVID-19 cases.

Nationwide, Japan reported 12,073 new cases, bringing the total to 1,045,032 cases.
