American Bobby Finke Wins First-Ever Olympic Gold in 800-Meter Freestyle

American Bobby Finke won the first-ever gold in the Olympic debut of the 800-meter freestyle final on July 29.

Finke, a first-time Olympian, finished the race at a time of seven minutes and 41.87 seconds, becoming the first American to win an Olympic distance race since 1984.

“I honestly did not expect to win at all, let alone a medal,” Finke, 21, said after the race.

“I just tried to do my best to get my hand on the wall. I was able to switch into another gear,” Finke further said.

Finke beat Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri, who finished the race at seven minutes and 42.11 seconds and was the 1,500-meter freestyle champion at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Ukranian Mykhailo Romanchuck won bronze with a time of seven minutes and 42.33 seconds.
