Wildfire Rages Through Forest Near Athens

A wildfire swept through a hillside forest north of Athens on July 27, seriously damaging at least a dozen homes and cars before being contained.

The fire started in the morning and ripped through the pine forest, affecting the towns of Dionysos, Stamata, and Rodopoli and prompting authorities to evacuate the residents.

The fire also interrupted traffic on several roads.

According to reports, 300 firefighters, eight water-dropping planes, and 12 helicopters were deployed to contain the blaze.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but local reports said that authorities are investigating that it may possibly be arson.
