Whole Foods Market recalled its Cahill Cheddar Porter and Whiskey Cheddar Cheeses due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections to people with weakened immune systems.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Listeria infection can only cause short-term effects such as high fever, nausea, headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhea for healthy people, however, it can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recall was initiated after Whole Foods Market discovered the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in their sample testing through the certified laboratory.
Whole Foods Market is working with distributors and retailers to quarantine and recover any impacted products remaining on store shelves.
Whole Foods Market advises consumers who bought the potentially contaminated product to not consume it and to throw it away or to return it to the place of sale for a full refund.
There have been no reported illnesses thus far from consuming the products.
