Flooding Kills 2 in Islamabad, Submerges City

Heavy flooding caused by a cloudburst has killed two people and inundated streets in Islamabad.

Islamabad police officials said a mother and her child died at their house in sector E11/2  after flood water entered the house’s basement at night.

“Cloudburst in Islamabad has caused flooding in various areas. Teams are clearing nullahs/roads. Hopefully, we will be able to clear everything in an hour,” said Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Muhammed Hamza Shafqaat.

Shafqaat said the spillways of Rawal Dam were being opened and cautioned residents to stay away from the riverbanks of the Korang and Soan rivers.

Videos shared on social media show cars being swept away on flooded streets while some structures are almost submerged.

“With the heavy monsoon rains, I want to alert and caution our citizens to take special care. I have also directed all the relevant response agencies including NDMA to be on high alert with ready & rapid emergency response actions,” said Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid said the army and the water and sanitation agency are already at the scene and are on high alert.
