India has recorded its first bird flu death after an 11-year-old boy died of H5N1 on Tuesday, as medical staff who were in contact with the patient undergo isolation.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences where the patient was admitted on July 2, has confirmed that the boy succumbed to the illness after multi-organ failure.
The health ministry said that an investigation as to how the boy contracted the disease is being carried out, but said that they found no symptomatic cases of the bird flu so far in the hospital and in the area where the boy resided.
“The animal husbandry department has not found any suspected cases of bird flu in the area (Chakkarpur in Gurgaon, Haryana) and has enhanced surveillance in a 10-km zone as a precautionary measure,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also said that close contacts have not shown any symptoms.
