Water-crisis Protests in Khuzestan Iran Escalates, Policeman Killed

Authorities in Iran have reported that a police officer was killed while another officer was injured in the protests over water shortages in Khuzestan province.

The police officer was the third one killed after two civilians, 18-year-old Ghasem Khozeiri and 30-year-old Mostafa Naimawi were also shot dead on Friday.

The water crisis in the region has caused the loss of livestock, amidst high temperatures and a sharp decrease in rainfall, while leaving dams with limited water for generating electricity, official IRNA news reported.

Officials have blamed the escalation of violence on ‘terrorist groups,’ while the killings on Friday were attributed to ‘opportunists and rioters.’

The protests have continued for the sixth night on Tuesday, as activists blame the killings on security forces.
