The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been struck a new problem, with fears that competitors may be swimming in feces and contract E.coli as a result of a suspected sewage leak.
The triathlon’s swimming leg as well as the open water swimming competitions will be hosted at Odaiba Marine Park, a city beach in the middle of Tokyo.
Residents living near the Tokyo site have previously complained about a terrible odor emerging from the event.
It is feared that if the smell was caused by the sewage leak, there may be dangerously high levels of E.coli in the water.
The triathlon begins on July 26, with heavy rain expected the next day, raising the possibility of a sewage breach.
The foul odor is most noticeable after a rainstorm when the over 100-year-old sewage system overflows and washes into the river that passes through Odaiba Marine Park.
