A suicide bomber has killed at least 35 people in a market in Sadr City on the eve of Eid al-Adha celebrations, on Monday.
The Islamic State on Telegram has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying one of its members blew up his explosive vest amidst the crowds in Wahailat market.
Over 50 people have been injured in the attack, with some in critical condition, according to sources.
The interior ministry has confirmed that the terror attack was carried out using a locally made IED.
Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi met with top security officials following the attack as President Barham Salih condemned the bombing.
“In a heinous crime and unparalleled cruelty, they target our civilians in Sadr City on the eve of Eid. They do not accept the people to rejoice, even for a moment, with security and joy,” the president said on Twitter.
“We will not be calm unless we uproot the hateful and cowardly terrorism, and it is certain that the will of the Iraqis is beyond their criminality and villainy,” the president also said.
