A group of unidentified armed men assassinated Nigerian Army’s Major General Hassan Ahmed while riding his vehicle along a major highway from the capital, Abuja, a spokesman for the army said on Friday.
According to Nigerian Army spokesman Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the perpetrators opened fire on Ahmed’s car along the Lokoja-Abuja highway.
“With a heavy heart, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya, Officers and Soldiers of the Nigerian Army regret to announce the passing on of Maj Gen Hassan Ahmed, a former Provost Marshall of the Nigerian Army,” Nwachukwu said in a statement.
The Nigerian Army did not confirm who was traveling with the late army general, but reporters said Ahmed was with his driver and a relative when the fatal gun attack occurred.
“A delegation from the Army Headquarters led by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army) Maj Gen Anthony Omozoje has visited the widow and other members of the bereaved family,” Nwachukwu said.
“Members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) led by the Deputy National President, Mrs. Stella Omozoje have also visited the family to condole with them.”
