A 28 year old police office was stabbed by a “lone wolf” assailant who later killed himself.
The officer suffered a punctured lung and underwent surgery overnight. He has been upgraded from serious to stable condition.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang told the reporters that the stabbing was a “local lone wolf terrorist attack.”
“Initial investigations indicate that this is a lone wolf style act of domestic terrorism,” Tang said.
“It’s not just the assailant who has to be held responsible for this incident, but also the many people who customarily advocate violence, incite hatred against the country, and beautify these attacks – these acts of violence,” Tang added.
He said police searched the home of the 50-year-old and that evidence on his computer revealed he was “radicalized,” but he didn’t go further.
Police have not identified the attacker. They also said that they are investigating the suicide of the man who stabbed himself in the chest and died of his wounds later.
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam condemned the stabbing and the other illegal acts.
“After going through months of riots in the second half of 2019, members of the public abhor violence and treasure very much the stability of society since the implementation of the National Security Law last year,” she said.
