Kenya Copter Crash Kills Undisclosed Number of Occupants

The Kenyan Defense Forces announced that a Kenyan Air Force helicopter has crashed on its way to land in Ol Tepesi in Kajiado County and that several passengers died.

The Russian manufactured, Soviet era, Mi-171E Multipurpose Helicopter was one of two remaining in Kenyan Air Force service.

“Regrettably, following the crash, we suffered fatalities. The process of communicating with the families to relay the information and KDF condolences are underway,” said  Kenya Defense Forces spokeswoman Zipporah Kioko.

The Defense Forces have not given an exact figure but an unnamed police official claimed 17 soldiers have died.

The police official also said that there were 23 passengers onboard the helicopter and that six people were severely injured.

Kioko said that the survivors have all been taken to the Defense Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi.

The Defense Forces said the helicopter was participating in a training mission when it crashed.
