Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike has been admitted to a hospital within the city due to severe fatigue amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a month before the Tokyo Olympics start.
Koike has been working on the city’s pandemic response and hosting the Olympics and Paralympics.
Koike arrived at the Tokyo metropolitan government building shortly after 11:30 a.m. (2:30 a.m. GMT) and complained of shortness of breath while she was talking with reporters.
Koike has recently attended an online meeting of representatives of five organizing bodies, including the International Olympic Committee regarding allowing domestic spectators and a meeting on the local vaccination drive.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced on Tuesday that Koike will take time off from work for the duration of the week because she needs to rest and would be replaced by deputy Gov. Mitsuchika Tarao.
