A huge natural gas explosion in a residential community in the Zhangwan District of Shiyan City in China killed at least 12 people and injured nearly 140 others on Sunday.
The explosion occurred at a two-story food market building filled at that time with stall keepers and customers buying breakfast and fresh vegetables at about 6:30 a.m. local time.
Local authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion.
“I heard a loud bang and immediately ducked under the table, thinking it was an earthquake,” said a small restaurant owner who is near the explosion.
authorities are continuing rescue efforts as people are still trapped under the debris.
Authorities have already rescued 138 people from the area including 37 victims that are in critical condition.
Some witnesses showed videos of several buildings reduced to rubble and rescue workers carrying survivors on stretchers.
About 2,000 rescue workers are still working on the site to search for survivors.
