At least two positive COVID-19 cases were reported among the passengers in Royal Caribbean’s first-ever “fully-vaccinated” cruise.
The two passengers were on board the Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Millennium which departed St. Maarten in the Caribbean on Saturday.
All passengers were required to show proof of vaccination in addition to a negative COVID-19 test within a 72-hour period before the ship left port
Celebrity Cruises spokesperson Jonathon Fishman said that the two passengers tested positive during the end-of-cruise testing.
Both passengers were reportedly asymptomatic and shared the same stateroom.
“The individuals are asymptomatic and currently in isolation and being monitored by our medical team. We are conducting contact tracing, expediting testing for all close contacts, and closely monitoring the situation,” said Celebrity Cruises.
Fishman said that the passengers were isolated in the vessel while it is currently docked in Curacao.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said COVID-19 vaccines are effective but there are still breakthrough cases in a small percentage of people who are fully vaccinated.
