The president of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee reiterated on Thursday that the Olympic Games cannot be further delayed or canceled.
Seiko Hashimoto wanted to push through the Games despite the pandemic.
“We cannot postpone again,” Hashimoto told Nikkan Sports newspaper.
Japan’s top COVID-19 advisor Shigeru Omi that it was “not normal” to host the Olympic Games in the country’s capital during the pandemic.
Omi also asked the organizers to scale down the event as much as possible and communicate their moves clearly if they want cooperation from the larger public.
Earlier, public opinion polls in Japan showed that they wanted to postpone or cancel the Games as it may cause the spread of the virus.
The Tokyo Shimbun newspaper reported on Thursday that a majority of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly also wanted the same thing.
Japan has more than 746,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 13,000 deaths.
