China has removed the scenes featuring guest stars Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and the K-pop group BTS in the much-awaited Friends reunion.
About six minutes of the special episode was missing as it rolled out on Chinese streaming services.
It was believed that footage of the stars was cut because they have insulted China in the past.
However, it was yet to be confirmed whether the government had issued a censorship directive, or if streaming platforms iQiyi, Youku, and Tencent Video.
In the original version of the special episode, BTS has appeared to share its love of Friends, with group leader RM saying the show “really taught me things about life and true friendship.”
Meanwhile, Gaga’s widely praised rendition of “Smelly Cat” with Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe was trimmed back to just a few seconds.
Bieber was formally banned from performing in the country in 2017 by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture because of a “series of bad behaviors.”
The reunion saw Friends stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer returned to the iconic comedy’s original soundstage for a real-life unscripted celebration of the beloved show.
