Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc. of San Diego, CA recalled cat food products due to potential contamination of Salmonella, a bacterial disease that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people with weakened immune systems.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), common signs and symptoms of a person infected with Salmonella include fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the disease can progress to something more severe such as infected aneurysms, which is the enlargement of an artery; endocarditis, which is the infection in the inner lining of the heart; and arthritis, which is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints.
The recall includes the following products:
- 5 LB Bag, Natural Balance L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets Green Pea & Chicken Formula Dry Cat Food
- 10 LB Bag, Natural Balance L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets Green Pea & Chicken Formula Dry Cat Food
The recalled product was distributed nationwide and online.
The cat food products was recalled after a routine sampling in a later lot of the finished product found the bacteria. Due to this, the later finished product lot was not released and continues to stay in a quarantined state.
In response to this, Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc.has provided information to the retailers who have purchased the recalled product. They urge retailers to contact their customers to facilitate the return of the contaminated products.
The company also encourages consumers who have purchased the food treats to stop using the product immediately and to return it to point-of-sale for a full refund and that a receipt is not required for this.
No other Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc. were affected or involved in this recall. There have also been no reported illnesses to date.
