A criminal investigation has been launched after 10 people have died from poisoning while carrying out work at a water treatment plant in a pumping station in the village of Dmitriadovka outside Taganrog southern Russia.
Aside from the deaths, 8 workers were also hospitalized for poisoning but there are still bodies and people at the site that have not been retrieved.
“A squad of the gas-smoke rescue service is working on the site. Information is being updated,” said the regional Main Directorate of the Emergencies Ministry.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said the workers had been exposed to a noxious substance and that they needed to determine if there were safety violations.
State-run RIA Novosti news agency reported that there was speculation that toxic substances accumulated inside collection facilities because of the warm weather.
