New York Offers $5 Million Lottery for Newly Vaccinated Citizens

Individuals aged 18 years and above could win up to $5 million if they get vaccinated against COVID-19 at select state-run vaccination sites next week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on May 20.

The new “Vax & Scratch” program offers prizes from $20 to $5 million for 13 individuals who will take their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine as part of ongoing efforts to encourage New Yorkers to get vaccinated.

“We’re doing everything we can to make getting a vaccine as quick and easy as possible, but as vaccination rates slow across the state, we’re going to have to get creative to put even more shots in arms,” Cuomo said in a statement.

“The more New Yorkers we can get vaccinated, the better our situation and the faster we can return to a new normal, so I encourage everyone who hasn’t been vaccinated yet to go to your nearest site and get the shot,” Cuomo further said.

The program will run from May 24 to 28 and will initially include 10 vaccination sites in New York City, Long Island, Mid-Hudson, Central New York, Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley, and Western New York regions.

As of May 20, the New York State has administered over 18 million COVID-19 vaccine doses and 43% of New Yorkers have been fully vaccinated, according to a separate announcement by Cuomo.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States has administered over 279 million vaccine doses across the states and 38.1% of the total population is fully vaccinated.
