Taiwan has announced the arrival of 400,000 more AstraZeneca vaccine doses as the country faces a surge in Covid-19 cases this week.
Taiwan has also raised its Covid-19 alert level in the entire island to level three after it reported 267 additional cases on Wednesday, as the country receives the 410,000 vaccines through the global COVAX facility.
“With the increase in the number of cities and counties recording new cases, we have decided to raise the alert to level 3 for all of Taiwan,” health minister Chen Shih-chung said.
The country has managed to keep cases low but was hit by a recent surge which started over the weekend, with the highest daily at 335 on Monday.
The health minister said the distribution of the doses could be done in a week, which will prioritize medical and frontline workers as well as high-risk groups.
The total number of cases in the country is now at 2,533 with 14 deaths.
