A spokesman for the New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced late Tuesday that her office has decided to join the Manhattan district attorney’s office to probe the Trump Organization “in a criminal capacity.”
Prior to this move, James’ office has been conducting a civil probe into the company of former President Donald Trump since 2019.
According to the spokesman for James’ office, the probe launched by the New York attorney general is going to be rolled out in conjunction with the ongoing criminal investigation into the Trump Organization that has been started by the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.
In a press release, James’ spokesman Fabien Levy said that the office was already able to inform the officials of the company of the criminal component.
“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil in nature. We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan District Attorney. We have no additional comment at this time,” Levy said in a statement.
James’ office conducted its civil probe in 2019 after Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified before the Congress and claimed that annual financial statements of the former U.S. leader had inflated the value of his assets while seeking loans and insurance coverage and deflated the value of other assets to reduce tax liability.
