Russia Reports First Cases of Indian Strain COVID-19 Infections

Russia confirmed that it detected the first cases of the Indian COVID-19 strain within its borders among a group of Indian students who recently arrived in the country.

Russian health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor reported that 16 cases were found among Indian students attending Ulyanovsk State University.

The 16 cases were found from a group of 130 first-year medical students from India who arrived in Ulyanovsk last April 17-30.

The 130 all presented negative test results from home but almost half were found to be positive including the 16 cases after they were tested again on arrival.

Rospotrebnadzor official Dilyar Khakimov said that all students who tested positive were moved from quarantine to medical observation at a COVID-19 facility.

The cases were reported a day after Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova claimed that they have not recorded any cases of the Indian variant.
