The DarkSide ransomware group posted a new “press release” saying that they are apolitical and will vet all targets before they are attacked after the recent Colonial Pipeline hack.
“Our goal is to make money and not creating problems for society. We are apolitical, we do not participate in geopolitics, do not need to tie us with a defined government [sic] and look for other … motives,” said Darkside.
The statement came after US authorities implied the Colonial Pipeline hack was related to the Russian government.
US President Joe Biden said they did not yet have evidence the attack was state-sponsored or that Russia was involved, but said that “there is evidence that the actors, ransomware, is in Russia.”
Currently, Colonial Pipeline is still offline while several states have declared a state of emergency due to fuel shortages.
Darkside has not yet expressed any plans to give Colonial Pipeline decryption keys while US authorities have not yet disclosed plans to go after Darkside.
