The Myanmar junta has declared the country’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG) as “terrorists,” on Saturday.
This following the NUG’s announcement that it will establish a People Defence Force for protection against military violence, on Wednesday.
Over the weekend state-run television declared the NUG, the People Defence Force and the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) as “terrorist organizations.”
“We ask the people not to … support terrorist actions, give aid to terrorist actions that threaten the people’s security from the CRPH, NUG, and PDF,” state media said.
The NUG is composed of elected lawmakers who were ousted following the February 1 coup.
Its new designation as a terrorist group means that those in contact with them, including journalists, could face charges under anti-terrorism laws.
The move also comes amidst intensified crackdown on journalists and shutting down of news outlets across the country.
