A teenager armed with a machete on May 4 attacked a daycare center in Southern Brazil, killing five, according to local police.
Police said an 18-year-old with a “samurai-style” weapon killed three children and two staff members after breaking into a daycare center in the small town of Saudades in Santa Catarina state.
Police Chief Jeronimo Marcal Ferreira said at a press conference that a fourth child suffered light injuries.
The ages of the children were not released.
Local media reported that the daycare center was for children aged between six months and three years.
Police also said that the attacker, whose identity has not been released, has been hospitalized and is in critical condition after he turned his weapon on himself and slashed his own body.
The motive of the attacker has not been made clear.
Governor Daniela Reinehr described the incident as a “tragedy” and declared three days of mourning in the state.
“I express deep sadness and offer my solidarity. I determined that the government should provide all the necessary support to families,” Reinehr stated on Twitter.
