Far-right group Proud Boys Canada announced that it has dissolved itself, months after the government designated it as a terrorist organization.
“The truth is, we were never terrorists or a white supremacy group,” Proud Boys Canada said in a statement posted on Telegram, claiming that it has done nothing wrong.
“We are electricians, carpenters, financial advisers, mechanics, etc. More than that, we are fathers, brothers, uncles, and sons,” the group further stated.
The announcement came months after the Canadian government added the group to a list of terrorist organizations described as “ideologically motivated violent extremist groups,” which included militant Islamist groups Islamic State and Al-Qaeda.
“Violent extremism has no place in Canada,” Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said last February.
Canada became the first country to label the Proud Boys as a terrorist entity after the group participated in the deadly attack on the United States Capital last Jan. 6 with supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Proud Boys was founded by Gavin McInnes, a Canadian living in the U.S. and who co-founded Vice magazine.
