Pakistani Embassy Staff Caught Shoplifting in South Korea

Police in South Korea on Saturday said two Pakistan embassy staff were caught shoplifting chocolate treats and a hat in separate thefts.

Yongsan Police said one was caught allegedly stealing chocolate treats worth 1,900 won ($1.70) in January and the other a hat worth 11,000 won ($10) in February.

The store employee filed a report immediately after the hat was stolen and authorities identified the suspect through CCTV footage, the Korea Times reported.

However, no charges were brought against the suspect protected by diplomatic immunity, while the other is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Ambassador to South Korea Mumtaz Zahra Baloch clarified they were not diplomats.

“Both are officials working in the embassy and are not diplomats,” Baloch said and added they are now coordinating with local police.

She also said the officials will be duly penalized if found guilty.
