Indonesian Submarine Goes Missing During Torpedo Drill

An Indonesian submarine with 53 people on board has gone missing while conducting a torpedo drill in waters north of the island of Bali.

“We are still searching in the waters off Bali, 96 km from Bali, (for) 53 people,” said military chief Hadi Tjahjanto.

First Admiral Julius Widjojono said the KRI Nanggala-402 lost contact at around 3:00 am and that authorities are still searching for it.

“We know the area but it’s quite deep,” said Widjojono.

The Indonesian government has already asked for help from Australia and Singapore to find the KRI Nanggala-402.

KRI Nanggala-402 was built in Germany in 1978 and was retrofitted in South Korea in 2012.
