Geico Data Breached, Customer Drivers License Numbers Exposed

Geico notified their customers that their personal information, including their driver’s license numbers, has been leaked in a data breach caused by a security bug on their website.

“Fraudsters used information about you — which they acquired elsewhere — to obtain unauthorized access to your driver’s license number through the online sales system on [Geico’s] website,” said Geico.

According to Geico, the attackers first gained access to customer accounts on January 21 and continued intrusions until March 1.

Geico said they speculate that the stolen information could be used to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits in the name of the victims.

Geico however did not indicate how many customers may have been affected or whether the breach was confined to California.

Geico advised affected customers to remain vigilant and offered a one-year subscription to IdentifyForce, an “identity-theft protection service.”
