Chad President Idriss Deby Killed in Clashes

Chad army spokesman General Azem Bermandoa Agouna reported that President Idriss Deby, who recently won his 6th term has died of injuries while visiting troops on the front lines.

(Deby)  “has just breathed his last defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield,” said Agouna.

Deby was visiting an outpost over the weekend to visit troops who were fighting Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT) rebels who had recently launched a major incursion into the north of the country on election day.

There are no details yet on how Deby actually died. His son Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, a four-star general, will replace him.

“A call to dialogue and peace is launched to all Chadians in the country and abroad in order to continue to build Chad together. The National Council of Transition reassures the Chadian people that all measures have been taken to guarantee peace, security, and the republican order,” added Agouna.

Deby has been ruling the country since 1990 after a revolution against President Hissène Habré.
