EU High Representative Josep Borrell claimed that Russia has amassed more than 150,000 troops on Ukraine’s border and annexed Crimea.
“It is more than 150,000 Russian troops massing on the Ukrainian borders and in Crimea. The risk of further escalation is evident,” said Borrell but did not cite his sources.
Iuliia Mendel, spokeswoman for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said earlier last week that 40,000 Russian troops were gathered in Crimea and another 40,000 in other regions along the border.
Borrell added that they were not preparing new sanctions against Russia over the troop buildup despite protests from Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
According to The Sunday Times, a source in the Royal Navy said two British warships were headed for the Black Sea aimed at showing solidarity with Ukraine and Britain’s NATO allies.
The deployment was not confirmed by the Royal Navy while Russia earlier announced that it would close off the Black Sea.
The said ships were reported to be a Type 45 destroyer armed with anti-aircraft missiles and an anti-submarine Type 23 frigate would be leaving from the Mediterranean.
The carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth and its aircraft would also be supporting the ships on their deployment.
