French Embassy Orders All Citizens to Leave Pakistan

The French embassy in Pakistan advised all French nationals and companies to temporarily leave the country after violent anti-France protests broke out across the country this week.

“Due to the serious threats to French interests in Pakistan, French nationals and French companies are advised to temporarily leave the country. The departures will be carried out by existing commercial airlines,” said the embassy.

The protests were attributed to the Tehrik-i-Labaik Pakistan (TLP), a hardline Islamist group that expressed outrage over Charlie Hebdo’s republishing of the Prophet Mohamed cartoons last year.

The TLP has also been demanding the expulsion of the French ambassador and endorsed a boycott of French products.

On Tuesday, TLP members clashed with police officers after their leader Saad Rizvi was arrested.

The riots left two police officers dead and prompted the Pakistani interior ministry to outlaw the TLP.
