Thailand Reports Daily Record of over 1,000 Cases in Third COVID Wave

The country reported a daily record of 1,335 new cases on Wednesday the highest yet, with cases containing the UK strain of the virus, as Thais celebrate the Songkran holidays.

A health official has earlier announced the plans of setting up 10,000 field hospital beds in capital Bangkok in response to the surge, as several hospitals have been turning away people due to limited bed capacity.

“We aim to increase (field) hospital beds to 10,000 in no time, which should give the public confidence that we can still contain this round of outbreak,” said Suksan Kittisupakorn, Director-General of Thailand’s Medical Service Department on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Public Health Secretary Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrajit has announced Wednesday that the government will start vaccination for the general public in May.

“The government aims to have 50-60 per cent of the population vaccinated as soon as possible to effectively control the outbreak,” the secretary said.

The country now has a nationwide total of 35, 910 coronavirus cases.
