A Ukrainian trooper was killed and another sustained severe wound after getting caught in an artillery fire against Russia-backed separatist forces as bloodshed continued to run high in the eastern region of Ukraine, the country’s military said on Sunday.
According to the Ukrainian military’s report, 27 soldiers were already killed as hostilities continued to rise sharply this year. More than half of the death toll includes the troopers who died in 2020.
Authorities have been concerned due to the intensifying attacks over the previous weeks as Russia started to set up groups along its border with Ukraine.
Dmitry Kozak, the deputy head of Russia’s presidential administration, said that the government forces are allowed to intervene with the clashes to “defend” and safeguard the welfare of the Russian people.
“Everything depends on the scale of the conflagration,” Kozak said in his statement.
