Army spokesman Mohammed Yerima says Gunmen killed 10 soldiers and one officer carrying out a routine operational task in conflict-ridden Central Nigerian state, Benue on Thursday.
“Nigerian Army troops operating in Benue State came under attack while on routine operational task,” Yerima said in a statement on Friday, giving no details as to the time of the attack.
“Efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators of this heinous crime with a view to bringing them to justice,” he added.
The identity of the armed assailants is unclear, but Benue State is part of Nigeria’s middle belt region which has been plagued by communal clashes between farmers and herders over land, grazing, and water.
The army says it will “fish out and deal decisively with these bad elements.”
