Iowa Basketball Star Makes History With First-of-its-Kind Digital Trading Card

Iowa basketball’s Luka Garza became the first college athlete to sell his own non-fungible token (NFT) in a historical move Tuesday.

The Hawkeye center’s NFT card features his own game portraits with an autograph in the corner, and hits the marketplace Friday in an online auction.

NFTs are a type of cryptocurrency asset that only have one copy in existence. NFTs are primarily used as art or collectibles, instead of a currency like bitcoin.

Garza waited until after the NCAA tournament to make the move. The announcement comes during a time when most college athletes still can not make money off their name, image and likeness.

Garza has the two highest-scoring seasons in the history of Iowa’s program totaling 1,487 in his junior and senior seasons alone. Garza also shot for nearly 40 percent from the 3-point range over his final two years.

The winner of the auction will get a dinner, movie and game of one-on-one with the unanimous national player of the year.
