Greek crime journalist George Karaivaz has been shot and killed near his home in Athens by two alleged hitmen onboard motorcycles.
Witnesses reported that two men on a motorcycle shot Karaivaz several times with a pistol then fled in an unknown direction.
Police recovered 17 shell casings from the scene and are questioning Karaivaz’s friends and families for more clues.
Police speculated that it was a professional hit and added that Karaivaz had not reported any threats against him or asked for their protection.
“Authorities are already investigating in order to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” said government spokesperson Aristotelia Peloni.
Karaivaz has worked for several Greek newspapers and broadcast media throughout his career and is the owner of the news blog bloko.gr.
“The founder and owner of bloko.gr is no longer with us. Somebody chose to silence him, to stop him with bullets from writing his stories,” read bloko.gr’s front page.
