The Polisario Front says its Police Chief has been killed in the disputed Western Sahara region while on a military mission in the liberated zone of Rouss Irni, in Tifariti.
The pro-independence movement’s defence ministry released a statement saying “the commander of the national gendarmerie Addah al-Bendir fell on Tuesday as a martyr on the field of honour.” The statement did not elaborate on the circumstances of his death.
The statement was released via the official news agency SPS but was taken down soon after without giving any explanation.
Western Sahara has seen tensions between Morocco and the Polisario front since 1975 when the front fought a war of independence against Morocco.
Morocco has granted independence to the territory but maintains that it is part of the kingdom.
