Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro said he has spoken with Russia about buying and domestically manufacturing the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine.
Bolsonaro’s office said that he talked to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday regarding the production of the Sputnik V vaccine.
Brazilian health regulator Anvisa however said that the Sputnik V vaccine has yet to be re-approved as it suspended a ruling on the emergency use of the immunization in March, citing incomplete and missing paperwork.
The federal Health Ministry plans to buy 10 million doses of Sputnik that will be produced domestically by local firm Uniao Quimica.
Brazil’s government wants to secure more vaccine supplies as the COVID-19 cases increase in the country.
Brazil has been the “second-deadliest” outbreak after the United States, and with its hospital system overloaded.
