Russian Police Briefly Detain CNN Journalist Reporting on Alexei Navalny’s Prison Hospital Transfer

CNN correspondent Matthew Chance was arrested with his crew outside of the Russian penal colony where Alexei Navalny has been detained while covering a hospital transfer.

“Just been detained by Russian police outside Navalny penal colony,” tweeted Chance and posted a photo of himself standing with a Russian guard.

Chance was reporting on Navalny’s transfer to a medical unit on Monday for possible respiratory problems and tested for coronavirus before getting detained.

Chance later tweeted that he was released and posted another selfie of him with the Russian guard.

Among those arrested were members from a group of pro-Navalny activists from the Alliance of Doctors, a union of medical professionals led by Navalny’s ophthalmologist Anastasia Vasilyeva.

Navalny has been complaining of his living conditions in the camp and has recently said he was having respiratory problems.

“If I have tuberculosis, then maybe it’ll chase out the pain in my back and numbness in my legs. That’d be nice,” joked Navalny.

Navalny’s supporters who were driven away by authorities said that they would be back to make sure he is well.

“I just want to help my patient, who is now in a terrible situation,” said Vasilyeva.

There has been no official announcement yet from the Russian government regarding Navalny’s condition or why the arrests were made.
