Tunisian activists held a protest in the port city of Sousse last Sunday to demand the return of nearly 300 containers of household waste illegally shipped from Italy.
The activists carried garbage bags loaded with bouquets of flowers and chanted “Tunisia is not the trash of Italy” and “there is no social justice without environmental justice.”
Sousse court official Jabbeur Ghnimi said Rome had given the Italian firm Sviluppo Risorse Ambientali Srl, that sent the garbage up until last week to retrieve the cargo.
The activist criticized the negligence of the authorities in Italy and Tunisia and demanded that the “Tunisian authorities show more determination.”
The garbage scandal led to the prosecution of Sousse port’s head of customs and the resignation of the country’s environment minister while eight people have been detained for participation.
Tunisian authorities are still looking for 17 other suspects involved in trash shipment.
