The U.S. Department of Energy announced fourteen finalists for the Spring 2021 Geothermal Collegiate Competition during a NextGen Geo virtual event Monday.
Reigning champion University of North Dakota is among the fourteen schools selected to advance.
The biannual competition gives students a chance to gain experience designing innovative renewable energy applications through real-world concepts, while also competing for a chance at $1,000.
The Spring finalists will need to identify a community for a direct-use geothermal energy system, then develop an engagement strategy for the local stakeholders.
A winner is projected to be announced on June 8, 2021.
