Osaka Olympic Torch Relay Canceled

Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that the Olympic torch relay to be held in Osaka has been canceled amid the COVID-19 surge.

Earlier, emergency measures have been imposed in the western region of Osaka to prevent the rebound in COVID-19 cases.

The decision of Suga comes after Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura called for the event to be canceled in the city.

“I personally think the Torch Relay in Osaka city should be canceled,” Yoshimura said.

Osaka reported 599 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, which was close to the record of 654 in early January.

Meanwhile, Tokyo reported 475 new infections on Thursday, having the most cases since February 10.

The torch relay for the Tokyo Olympics was set to be held in Osaka from April 13 to 14.
